How Is AI Changing Privacy in Messaging Apps?

Signal has emerged as the leading messaging app in terms of privacy, according to a recent evaluation of popular iOS messaging applications. The study assessed 10 apps based on encryption standards, data collection, tracking activities, and AI feature integration. Signal scored highest, followed by Apple’s Messages and Telegram, while LINE, Discord, and Messenger ranked lower. The report highlights the growing integration of AI features, such as translation tools and virtual assistants, in 90% of the apps reviewed. However, the use of AI in encrypted services raises new privacy concerns, as these features may require access to sensitive information. Encryption remains crucial, with nine out of ten apps offering end-to-end encryption, except for Discord. Signal and Apple’s Messages also stand out for their use of quantum-secure cryptography. Despite Apple’s high ranking, messages sent via SMS or MMS to Android users lack end-to-end encryption. The study reveals varying levels of data collection, with Messenger and LINE collecting the most data for purposes beyond basic functionality. In contrast, Signal and Telegram focus on operational data needs. The findings suggest that privacy discussions around messaging apps are shifting towards the amount of data collected, its usage, and its linkage to individual users, especially as AI features become more prevalent.
