Which iPhones Need an Update to Keep WhatsApp Running?

As of the end of November 2026, certain older iPhone models will require a software update to continue using WhatsApp, due to an increase in the app’s minimum system requirements. Starting November 30, WhatsApp will necessitate iOS 15.5 or later, compared to the current requirement of iOS 15.1. The affected models include the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone SE (1st generation), iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. These models can be updated to iOS 15.8.8, ensuring compatibility by simply navigating to Settings ➝ General ➝ Software Update. Unlike last year, when WhatsApp ceased support for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, this update does not drop any iPhone models outright. Meta routinely reviews supported operating systems annually, eliminating those with minimal users and lacking current security updates. Users on outdated versions will receive notifications within WhatsApp, prompting them to upgrade before the support deadline.
