A class action lawsuit in the UK accuses Apple of overcharging iCloud users, potentially leading to a £3 billion claim as it heads to trial in October 2028. The case, brought forward by the consumer group Which?, represents around 40 million UK iPhone and iPad users who may receive up to £77 each if successful. Which? claims Apple has restricted the functionality of rival cloud services on its devices since 2015, resulting in inflated subscription costs. Apple offers 5GB of free storage, with paid options ranging from 99p for 50GB to £54.99 for 12TB per month. The lawsuit was filed in November 2024, and Which? CEO Anabel Hoult emphasized the importance of holding powerful companies accountable. Apple disputes the allegations, insisting that iCloud use is optional and that alternatives are available. The case covers users of iCloud on UK devices between November 8, 2018, and June 8, 2026, with automatic inclusion for those in the UK on June 8 unless they opt out by October 8. Non-UK residents must opt in by the same date, and those who started using iCloud after June 8, 2026, are excluded.
