Will Siri AI Comply with EU Digital Rules for Its Launch?

Apple CEO Tim Cook recently engaged in discussions with EU tech chief Henna Virkkunen, focusing on the release of Siri AI in Europe in compliance with digital regulations. The meeting was described as “constructive,” with ongoing efforts to address the regulatory challenges. Siri AI is set to be included for free in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, launching in September; however, its enhanced features will not be available in the EU until they align with the region’s regulatory framework. Apple proposed a Trusted System Agent to allow third-party virtual assistants access to the same capabilities as Siri AI, but this was rejected by the EU, which emphasized Apple’s responsibility to comply with interoperability obligations under the Digital Markets Act. The Commission clarified that Apple’s request for an exemption was not feasible, while Apple has yet to publicly comment on the discussions.
