Google has announced that its Johannesburg Cloud Region is expected to contribute $90.6 billion to South Africa’s economy by 2030, alongside supporting 314,900 jobs. This was revealed during the first Africa Cloud Summit in Johannesburg. The company highlighted that African businesses are now implementing AI at scale, with major corporations like Vodacom, Discovery, Pepkor, and Naspers already utilizing the platform. Additionally, Google unveiled new initiatives including a connectivity hub in the Eastern Cape, an AI lab in Ghana, and a digital innovation center in Soweto. These efforts are part of a broader $1 billion investment plan for Africa, initially announced in 2021, aimed at enhancing connectivity, startup funding, and digital skills. The Johannesburg Cloud Region, operational since 2025, positions South Africa as a key data infrastructure hub for Google in Africa.
