Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2: thinner with a 5,000‑nit display and 800 mAh battery?

Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 sharpens the brand’s premium formula with a slimmer profile, a much larger battery, an extremely bright display and more outdoors-oriented features. After a hands-on, these hardware upgrades look aimed at improving both everyday use and outdoor excursions.

Design slimmed down and display more readable
The watch keeps the iconic look of its predecessor: a 47 mm titanium case, a circular dial set into a cushion-shaped bezel, and the signature orange Quick Button. The most noticeable change is thickness: 10.7 mm, roughly 12% thinner than the previous generation, which should make the Ultra 2 more comfortable for continuous wear. The strap has also been redesigned—26% lighter and noticeably more supple—improving comfort during workouts and overnight wear. The 1.52-inch display tops out at 5,000 nits, Samsung’s highest claimed peak brightness to date, which makes maps and training data far easier to read in direct sunlight.

Performance and battery strengthened
Under the hood, Samsung has moved to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite, abandoning its Exynos line for this generation. In initial use the interface felt smooth and responsive. The most tangible gain is battery capacity: 800 mAh versus 590 mAh on the previous model, an increase of about 35%. That’s promising for a Wear OS device—battery life has long been a pain point—but extended real-world testing will be necessary to confirm the improvement under daily and heavy-use conditions.

Outdoor features pushing the limits
The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 doubles down on the series’ “adventure” positioning. Samsung debuted a new diving experience developed with Mares: the watch automatically tracks depth, dive time and water temperature. It carries 10 ATM water resistance and an IP69K rating, suitable for more demanding environments than a typical smartwatch. The Trail Run mode shows routes, elevation changes, slopes, upcoming turns and distances on the watch, while estimating fluid loss and prompting hydration reminders.

Health and intelligent assists
On the health side, the Ultra 2 introduces new analysis tools and AI-driven features. The Fitness Index aggregates VO2 max, heart rate, body composition, active time and steps to generate multiple scores and personalized recommendations. Vitals builds a health baseline over several nights before flagging unusual variations in heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, skin temperature, respiration and heart rate variability. Samsung also adds Raise to Talk for Gemini, allowing users to start speaking to the assistant by simply raising their wrist—no button press required.

First impressions
The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 feels less like a full redesign and more like a significant evolution: a slimmer case, a much brighter display, a substantially larger battery and beefed-up outdoor features. Those changes make the watch more compelling for a mixed daily and sport use case. Longer, in-depth testing will be needed—particularly to validate real-world battery life and the effectiveness of the new health features—but Samsung’s “adventure watch” positioning is clearly reinforced.
