The first day after Galaxy Unpacked I spent time with both of Samsung’s new foldables — and, contrary to expectations, it’s the Galaxy Z Fold 8 I find myself reaching for most often, not the Ultra. Having received review units immediately after the presentation, my initial verdict is clear: the Fold 8 streamlines everyday use without sacrificing the identity of a true foldable.
A more natural in-hand experience
The change in proportions on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is immediately noticeable. After years of coping with very tall, narrow cover displays, the Fold 8 offers a more familiar surface for navigation, typing and multitasking. Within minutes, composing a message, scrolling a social feed or responding to a notification felt more natural; the narrow format no longer compromises comfort as much. And when I need a larger canvas, opening the device restores the tablet-like experience that defines the Fold line.
Why I choose the Fold 8 over the Ultra
Several factors explain this immediate preference. First, daily comfort and compactness: the Fold 8 slips into a pocket more easily and is simply nicer to handle for quick interactions. Second, the photographic compromises aren’t dealbreakers for my use — smartphone sensors are already very capable — and I favor manageability and simplicity. In short, the Fold 8 strikes a better balance between portability and versatility for everyday use.
The Ultra remains superior on paper
On pure specs, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra still holds clear advantages: a larger battery, more versatile camera modules and a few exclusive features that give it an edge on spec sheets. Those elements make the Ultra the more “capable” option if you prioritize maximum battery life and camera flexibility. But after a day with both devices, it’s the pragmatic, ergonomic choice that appeals most.
Perspective and caution
I’ve been an early adopter of foldables since their debut, so I acknowledge these impressions may evolve. The first hours of use are convincing, but extended testing and daily use will confirm—or overturn—this initial judgment. For now, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 has managed the neat trick of making the foldable format feel simpler and more natural, enough to pull me away from the Ultra for routine use.
Bottom line
On the ground of ergonomics and everyday practicality, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 wins me over, even though the Ultra keeps strong arguments on paper. Time will tell whether that preference endures.
