Malachyte, a behavioral intelligence startup founded by former Spotify engineers, has raised $10 million in a seed round co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient Ventures, with participation from Harpoon Ventures, to expand its AI platform that personalizes online shopping experiences in real time. The New York-based company was founded by CEO Sidd Motwani, CTO Ian Anderson and COO Shivaditya Sinha.
The founders built the behavioral intelligence infrastructure that powers more than 90% of Spotify’s recommendation system across over 800 million users and more than one billion content items. They are now applying similar technology to e-commerce as retailers seek more effective ways to convert website traffic into sales amid rising customer acquisition costs and competitive digital advertising markets.
Behavioral intelligence platform
Malachyte’s platform analyzes shopper behavior instead of relying on cookies, account logins or historical customer profiles. The technology continuously interprets visitor intent and preferences during a browsing session, enabling retailers to personalize product recommendations and merchandising across websites, email campaigns and other digital channels.
Motwani said the platform was built to help retailers better understand every shopper, including first-time visitors who typically receive generic online experiences. The company says behavioral signals provide a more effective foundation for personalization than traditional identity-based approaches, allowing recommendations to improve as customers continue interacting with a brand.
The company describes its technology as a two-headed vector AI architecture that simultaneously evaluates customer intent and product preferences by analyzing visual context and browsing behavior rather than relying solely on keywords or product tags. Malachyte says the platform can be deployed in as little as seven days, supports sub-200 millisecond response times during peak shopping periods and includes merchandising controls that let retailers establish business rules alongside AI-generated recommendations.
Early commercial results
Early customers report measurable gains after implementing the platform. HalloweenCostumes.com, part of Fun.com, reported a 31% increase in revenue per visitor. Brunt Workwear recorded an 80% improvement in add-to-cart click-through rates, and apparel brand Jordan Craig reported a 17% increase in revenue per visit from first-time shoppers, with roughly 80% of its website traffic coming from new visitors.
Emilee Walch, Vice President of Digital Product at Brunt Workwear, said the platform has improved product recommendations throughout the customer journey by adapting to visitor behavior from the moment shoppers arrive on the company’s website and delivered a measurable return on investment shortly after deployment.
Investors see the opportunity extending beyond traditional e-commerce personalization as AI-powered shopping agents become more involved in product discovery and purchasing decisions. Maha Malik, Vice President at Bessemer Venture Partners, said the evolution of AI-driven commerce is raising expectations for personalized shopping experiences while increasing the need for infrastructure capable of interpreting buyer intent, and that the founding team’s experience developing recommendation systems at global scale positions the company to help retailers adapt to changing consumer behavior.
Malachyte plans to use the new capital to expand distribution of its behavior intelligence platform and hire senior commercial and product executives as it grows its customer base. By focusing on real-time behavioral data rather than identity-based personalization, the company is positioning itself to help retailers improve conversion rates and revenue per visitor in an increasingly competitive e-commerce environment.
