Apple is re-evaluating the Apple Watch lineup and weighing several radical design directions, including a round display and screenless, Apple Watch–style fitness devices, according to Mark Gurman.
Apple Watch design directions under consideration
Apple’s industrial design team has reportedly been exploring a broader rethink of its smartwatches for some time, with multiple directions under evaluation. The company is said to be taking the recent resurgence of screenless fitness bands and smart rings seriously and is considering new Apple Watch–style devices without any display, as well as watches with different screen types and a range of new sizes.
A round display has been contemplated, though Gurman cautions such a model is unlikely to be released. Apple has also considered adding new premium variants positioned above the Ultra and Hermès models, alongside plans for even more affordable options in addition to the existing Apple Watch SE.
The company has not yet settled on a final direction for the product line but is reportedly determined to reinvent the lineup in response to growing competition. Apple also plans to make its wearables more AI-focused and has ambitious long-term plans to revamp the Health app.
Gurman suggests the Apple Watch revamp could be as significant as the iPhone’s move toward a foldable form, with the company hoping to reinvigorate its Wearables, Home and Accessories segment after recent challenges in generating growth.
