Materials discovery startup Discovered Materials raises $9M seed

SAN FRANCISCO, August 10, 2026 — Discovered Materials announced a $9 million seed round led by Lightspeed India Partners to scale its AI agents and speed the adoption of new materials for semiconductor chips. The company also published hundreds of new materials discovered by frontier AI models and released Material Discovery Bench, described as the first benchmark for agentic materials discovery on real-world semiconductor chip problems.

The round includes participation from Y Combinator and Peak XV Partners, plus angel investors Paul Graham, Gokul Rajaram and Thariq Shihipar. The funding will be used to expand the company’s AI-driven workflows that the startup says compress months of interdisciplinary research into days, shortening the lab-to-fab timeline for new materials.

“AI is creating unprecedented demand for better chips, but progress is increasingly constrained by how slowly new materials reach production. Akash and Advaith bring together a rare combination of deep materials science expertise and frontier AI engineering, enabling them to compress years of materials R&D into days,” said Hemant Mohapatra, Partner at Lightspeed India Venture Partners. “We’re excited to partner with Discovered Materials as they build the future of semiconductor innovation, starting with a very urgent wedge on better heat dissipation from increasingly hotter chips.”

AI chips face severe thermal challenges: GPUs today handle heat fluxes of roughly 140 W/cm², a level the company compares to the heat experienced by a space shuttle nose cone on re-entry. Discovered Materials argues new materials can both enable denser 3D stacking to reduce heat generation and improve heat dissipation once it is produced. The company notes that moving a new material from experiment to industrial fab currently takes years and hundreds of millions of dollars, a barrier often called the industry’s “valley of death.”

Discovered Materials builds AI agents that span simulation, synthesis and experimental validation to accelerate discovery. Alongside the materials release, Material Discovery Bench was developed with experts from industry and academia to track frontier model performance on semiconductor-relevant problems. The company says it will continue developing graders that test AI-discovered materials in both simulation and experiment.
