Samsung says Galaxy phones can automatically switch from 24MP to 12MP even when users have selected 24MP, because the change is an intentional part of the camera’s shooting pipeline to preserve image quality and protect the device.
Why 24MP mode can revert to 12MP
The 24MP option, introduced with the Galaxy S26 series and later made available on recent foldables, sits alongside the existing 12MP default and higher-resolution choices such as 50MP or 200MP on supported models. After reports from a Galaxy Z Fold 8 user in South Korea and confirmations from several Galaxy S26 Ultra owners that photos sometimes reverted to 12MP without warnings, a community moderator escalated the issue to Samsung’s engineering team. Engineers examined log files and additional details and concluded the behavior is not a camera bug but a deliberate fallback when shooting at 24MP cannot reliably guarantee stable picture quality.
According to Samsung, the camera can automatically switch back to 12MP in specific situations where 24MP performance would be affected. These include using zoom, shooting in low light, enabling Motion Photo, using the flash, taking close-up photos, or capturing multiple shots continuously. The company also says the phone’s surface temperature can trigger the change: if the device reaches 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit), the camera may revert to 12MP as a protective measure. In the Fold 8 case, the user had been shooting outdoors in hot weather and taking several consecutive photos, activating multiple fallback conditions at once.
How to keep shooting at 24MP
Samsung recommends several steps to reduce the likelihood of an automatic fallback to 12MP: stick to 1x zoom, avoid using the camera when the phone is overheating, leave some time between consecutive shots, and avoid features such as Motion Photo or flash when possible. These measures increase the chance that the camera will remain in 24MP mode, but Samsung’s camera software can still temporarily prioritize stable image quality and device protection when certain conditions are detected.
