Microsoft is combining its consumer and commercial Copilot assistants into a single Microsoft Copilot app, starting with the Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot apps. Both personal and work accounts will be moved into the unified app, which reuses the “Microsoft Copilot” name and introduces an updated app icon so users no longer see two Copilot icons in the system tray or taskbar.
“Starting with a fresh look, the updated app combines the best of Copilot chat and image creation, with the power of Microsoft 365 for your work,” Microsoft said in its update announcement.
Microsoft Copilot rollout and migration details
A worldwide rollout for the mobile and web apps will start in “mid-August,” with Windows and Mac apps set to roll out in “mid-September.” Mobile users will be prompted to download the new Copilot app, and the updates will begin appearing for some Windows Insiders this week.
What users see will depend on which Copilot apps they already use. Existing Microsoft Copilot users will be moved to the updated version along with their chats and content. Microsoft 365 Copilot app users will see “minor navigation changes,” the updated Copilot icon, and gain access to Copilot chat. If a person already uses both apps, Microsoft says chats and content will be merged into the single updated Copilot app, while chats, content, and data will remain separate between account types within the app.
Enterprise controls, accounts and usage
Microsoft says there are no changes to enterprise security, compliance, and government controls. Users will still be able to switch between their Microsoft account (personal) and Microsoft Entra ID (work or school), and both account types will remain entirely separate. Core Copilot capabilities will remain free, though some people may see different usage limits for the free experience in the updated app.
Features removed and temporarily unavailable
Podcasts and Deep Research are being retired and will not be available after August 18th. Group Chat threads, messages, and content also will not be carried over to the new app experience after this date. Microsoft says these are the only impacted services mentioned, though it adds that other features like Copilot Health “may be temporarily unavailable” while the updates are rolled out. A correction on August 13th notes that Shopping is not one of the features that will be unavailable during the migration.
Why this matters
Microsoft frames the updates as a technical milestone in preparation for a broader “super app” it plans to launch later this year. The changes follow months after Microsoft appointed a new Copilot chief to oversee both the consumer and commercial sides of the assistant, and reflect a shift toward the commercial user interface and away from the distinctive Copilot design introduced in 2024 after Mustafa Suleyman joined the company.
