The Lean AI Startup Funding (LAISF) 2026/27 is a six-month scholarship for teams with innovative, AI-driven ideas. The program period runs from 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2027; applications were due by 10 August 2026, 12:00 noon (CEST) and are reported as closed.
Lean AI Startup Funding: program details
LAISF supports early-stage AI ventures—research-driven spin-offs and market-oriented innovations—with time, funding and guidance to validate a business model, develop a prototype and increase investment readiness. The scholarship funds up to two people full-time (splittable across up to three people part-time if the funding is split accordingly) and covers 5,000 € in material expenses. At the program’s mid-term presentation, teams can compete for up to 30,000 € in additional funding.
Monthly scholarship rates depend on applicants’ qualifications and correspond to a full-time equivalent: students (at least half of studies completed) 1,000 €; technical staff 2,000 €; graduates with a university degree 2,500 €; founders with a doctorate 3,000 €. A child supplement of 150 € per dependent child per month is available.
Application process and timeline
Prospective applicants were invited to voluntary preparation workshops on 8 July (10:00–12:00) and 5 August (10:30–12:30) titled “Shape Your AI Startup Concept – by Philip Travers,” and live FAQ sessions on 20 July (14:00) and 29 July (16:00). The selection timeline in the source lists submission by 10 August 2026 (12:00 CEST), selected teams announced on 12 August, and a final round between 14 and 20 August featuring a 3‑minute pitch and a 3‑minute Q&A with the jury (schedule depending on the final jury timetable).
Applicants must complete the hessian.AI application form and provide a detailed project description showing the AI core and its innovation level, the value proposition, technical descriptions and potential use cases, the market environment and market entry strategy, and a plan for realizing the project. The LAISF follows scholarship conditions based on applicants’ qualifications similar to the EXIST Gründerstipendium.
Eligibility, requirements and deliverables
Eligibility requirements in the source include having a research-driven and/or innovative AI business idea, not being incorporated (incorporation during the funding period should be avoided to prevent jeopardising follow-up financing from other grants), and no parallel funding for the same project. Funded team members must have permanent residency within the Federal Republic of Germany for the duration of the scholarship; a residency in Hesse is not required. Working outside the funded project is allowed up to 5 hours per week unless the funding is split to allow part-time work.
LAISF is described as an early-stage validation fund: projects may apply without prior work, but any existing validation efforts and prototype status should be documented. After three months grantees present progress — and, if they make a convincing case, may receive up to 30,000 € additional funding for the final three months. A written project documentation must be submitted six weeks after the funding period ends. Solo founders may apply if they can deliver the technical prototyping, validation and business development.
