President John Dramani Mahama has announced an upcoming nationwide ban on the importation and local production of styrofoam plastic, commonly used for takeaway food packaging. This decision aims to combat the significant environmental pollution caused by styrofoam, which is a major contributor to the 1.1 million metric tons of plastic waste produced annually in Ghana, with less than 10% being recycled. The President highlighted the persistent nature of styrofoam waste, which clogs drainage systems and pollutes water bodies, exacerbating urban flooding issues, particularly in Accra. As part of a shift towards sustainable packaging, paper and aluminium foil will replace styrofoam for food packaging. Manufacturers and importers are urged to prepare for this transition, aligning with the country’s broader environmental goals to improve waste management and promote a greener economy. This initiative is expected to reduce plastic pollution, enhance sanitation, and decrease flooding risks, ultimately improving citizens’ quality of life.
