Apple’s new iPhone Duo addresses a speaker placement issue that has frustrated some Galaxy Z Fold 8 users: where Samsung placed both speakers in the cover-screen half, Apple positions each speaker on opposite halves, which should improve stereo separation when the foldable is used unfolded.
Speaker placement and the Fold 8 problem
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 embeds both speakers in the cover screen half of the phone — one at the top and the other at the bottom. That layout works well when viewing content in landscape on the cover screen, but once the Fold 8 is unfolded into landscape mode both speakers effectively fire from the same (left) side, a setup that almost negates the phone’s stereo capabilities. The Fold 8’s speakers have also been described as tinny-sounding.
How the iPhone Duo handles speakers
Apple’s iPhone Duo likewise includes two speakers, but places them on opposite halves: one at the bottom of the camera half and the other at the top of the cover display half. When the iPhone Duo is unfolded and used as a tablet in landscape, one speaker fires from the upper-left and the other from the lower-right. The placement is not perfectly symmetrical, but it should provide better stereo separation than the Fold 8’s solution. Apple illustrated this characteristic with a screenshot; how the iPhone Duo’s speakers actually sound is not yet known.
This design choice is not presented as a radical innovation, but rather as a clear layout decision. Some Fold 8 users had already wished for this kind of speaker arrangement weeks before Apple announced the iPhone Duo. It’s noted as a bit of a head-scratcher that Samsung did not adopt the same approach for the Fold 8, though Samsung may have had other design constraints. In any case, the iPhone Duo’s speaker placement is judged to be better than the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s, and there is hope that Samsung will consider a similar solution for a future Fold model.
