iPhone Duo: Apple on the inner-display crease and durability

Apple has addressed questions about the visible crease on the iPhone Duo’s inner display, saying the screen is “wonderfully flat and smooth” while describing technologies intended to minimize crease visibility.

iPhone Duo crease and display technology

Apple’s product FAQ asks, “Does the inner display of iPhone Duo show a crease where it folds?” In its response the company says the display is “wonderfully flat and smooth,” but it does not explicitly state there is no crease and the answer skirts the question.

The product page explains: “iPhone Duo features a wonderfully flat and smooth inner display with custom nano-texture finish technology to reduce glare and reflections for an uninterrupted viewing experience. The optically clear adhesives let the display layers glide as the screen folds, minimizing stress and crease.” In a press release, Apple adds that the Duo’s nano-texture display is meant to minimize the visibility of the crease: “A premium nano-texture finish reduces glare and reflections, creating a matte surface that minimizes crease visibility and feels great to touch.”

Hinge, durability claims and comparison

Apple does not list a fold cycle count on its website or in the press release. The company says the hinge offers “smooth, balanced resistance for long-lasting reliability,” and that the hinge contains more than 100 components. Apple also notes the iPhone Duo includes support ribs and a titanium panel under the display.

By contrast, competitor Samsung publishes fold cycle ratings for its devices: the Galaxy Z Fold8 is rated for 500,000 folds. Apple has set the iPhone Duo launch date for October 23, with pre-orders starting on October 16.
