Samsung may still be in contention to manufacture Qualcomm’s upcoming 2nm mobile chips, even as Qualcomm prepares to unveil its new flagship chipsets later this month. The company is expected to launch two models, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, and the Galaxy S27 series will use Qualcomm’s latest chipset.
Earlier reports had suggested Qualcomm would rely exclusively on TSMC, but the latest reports indicate Samsung remains a candidate. Qualcomm last had its flagship chips manufactured by Samsung several years ago, after Samsung Foundry suffered yield issues on advanced nodes.
Samsung’s 2nm progress and yields
Samsung’s 2nm process is reported to be faring better and has already secured orders from major US companies. Yields are said to be around 55%, a commendable improvement yet still below TSMC’s reported 60–70% yields.
Samsung and Qualcomm are reportedly discussing specifications, pricing and process optimization for a potential manufacturing deal. The possibility that Qualcomm could use both TSMC and Samsung to produce its 2nm chips is still believed to be active.
