Samsung adds security chip to phone batteries to verify authenticity

Samsung will start adding a security chip to the batteries of some of its phones so users can verify whether a replaced battery is genuine, Korean media report. The move is intended to protect customers from substandard or fake parts, particularly batteries, which can cause safety and performance problems.

The company will initially fit the security chip in batteries for certain low-end and mid-range models, such as the Galaxy A series. According to the reports, this is the first time Samsung will use such chips to guarantee verifiable authenticity for its batteries.

Security chip lets users verify replacement batteries

When users have their phone battery replaced, the presence of the security chip will allow them to check if the part installed by the service center is an official Samsung component rather than an unofficial or counterfeit part. That verification capability is presented as a way to ensure quality and safety for a critical component inside the phone.

Samsung may roll out the initiative gradually, installing the chip in approximately 50 million units of the specified devices next year. The reports add that the company could eventually expand the program across its entire device lineup.
