Galaxy Z Fold8 battery: Samsung’s longest-lasting Folds yet

The Galaxy Z Fold8 battery performance keeps both new Fold models comfortably lasting a full day in everyday use, with the Fold8 Ultra reaching Samsung’s highest rated video-playback figure for a Fold to date. The Fold8 Ultra carries a 5,000 mAh battery rated for up to 27 hours of video playback, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 has a 4,800 mAh battery rated for up to 26 hours.

Galaxy Z Fold8 battery specs and ratings

Both phones use silicon-carbon battery construction to increase energy density. Key numbers: the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has a typical 5,000 mAh cell (rated minimum 4,854 mAh) with up to 27 hours of lab-rated video playback. The Galaxy Z Fold8 has a typical 4,800 mAh cell (rated minimum 4,660 mAh) and up to 26 hours of rated video playback. Wired charging is up to 45W on both models; wireless charging is up to 20W. In a 30-minute wired charge, the Fold8 Ultra reaches up to 67% and the Fold8 up to 63%.

Real-world endurance and usage

In our experience, both phones comfortably lasted a normal day of messaging, web browsing, camera use and mobile-data time, with enough remaining charge for lighter use the following morning on the Ultra. A single full charge could take the Fold8 from Friday morning into Saturday afternoon with lighter use, especially when relying more on the cover screen. Screen brightness is a major variable: the main and cover displays can peak at up to 3,000 nits for sunlit visibility, and sustained outdoor use draws more power than indoor use.

Gaming, streaming and multitasking

Both models handle demanding main-screen use across a day. Video streaming can keep the main display active for long stretches; gaming imposes sustained load on display and processor. In practice, a day of mixed heavy use on the main display still leaves both phones with battery to spare by evening. More frequent use of the cover screen for lighter tasks can extend runtime further, and both phones can reach into a second day with lighter usage patterns.

How the Fold8 line compares to earlier models

Yes — these are the longest-lasting Galaxy Z Fold phones to date. Rated video-playback figures have steadily increased each generation: Fold4 at 20 hours, Fold5 at 21, Fold6 at 23, Fold7 at 24, with the Fold8 at 26 and the Fold8 Ultra at 27. The Fold8 Ultra’s 5,000 mAh battery is the largest Samsung has placed in a Galaxy Z Fold. The silicon-carbon cells also let Samsung fit larger batteries into thinner or lighter bodies: the Fold8 Ultra measures 4.1 mm unfolded and weighs 215 g while housing 5,000 mAh; by comparison the Fold7 measured 4.2 mm unfolded at the same 215 g with a 4,400 mAh battery. The Fold8 packs 4,800 mAh into a 201 g chassis — 400 mAh more than the Fold7 while weighing 14 g less.

Charging performance and Wireless PowerShare

Both models support 45W Super Fast Charging 2.0 with a compatible adapter (charger sold separately). In charging tests, each phone reached roughly 95% after an hour and a full charge in just under 70 minutes. Both support up to 20W wireless charging (up from 15W on the Fold7) and Wireless PowerShare for topping up compatible Qi devices; Wireless PowerShare requires a minimum of 30% battery to use. The stated 30-minute charge percentages (67% Ultra, 63% Fold8) were closely matched in testing.

Battery health and power-saving features

Samsung includes a Battery protection menu with options to reduce long-term wear: Basic (stops charging at 100% and resumes at 95%), Maximum (cap the charge at 80%, 85%, 90% or 95%), and Sleep time protection (hold at 80% while you sleep, finishing to 100% shortly before wake). Power saving mode reduces background activity, screen brightness, refresh rate and CPU performance to extend runtime; an Adaptive power saving setting can enable this automatically based on usage patterns.

Lab-rated playtimes are estimates based on battery capacity and measured power use while a stored 720p video plays on the main display with Bluetooth earphones connected and default settings over LTE. Streaming, mixed app use, connectivity and screen brightness will affect real-world battery life.

Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra deliver day-long endurance in everyday scenarios, paired with larger batteries, faster wired charging and battery-health options that aim to preserve capacity over time.
