iPhone Duo under-display FaceTime camera delivers ‘trash’ photos

The iPhone Duo debuts an under-display front camera on its inner screen — the first time Apple has used this technology — but early reviews report poor photo quality. Apple says the under-display camera supports 1080p video recording but did not comment on still-photo performance.

One reviewer identified the sensor as 4 megapixels and described the resulting images as low-resolution, washed out and not sharp. YouTuber Marques Brownlee called the camera “very first gen” and said the photo quality is “trash.” Reviewers generally find the camera better suited to video than to selfies, and note that it largely disappears into the background while using the phone.

Under-display camera performance

Hands-on impressions emphasize limited still-image capability: photos appear low-res and lacking detail, while video is acceptable at 1080p. The experience echoes past efforts by other manufacturers, which previously implemented under-display cameras and later abandoned them because of poor image quality.

Selfie alternatives on the iPhone Duo

The Duo also includes a 12-megapixel front-facing camera on the outer display, which reviewers say is substantially better for selfies. With the phone unfolded, you can also use the rear cameras for self-portraits; there is an option to move the camera controls to the outer screen so the outer display can serve as a viewfinder for rear-camera selfies.
