Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra camera: 50MP ultrawide and 200MP main upgrades

The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra has the best camera system Samsung has put in a Galaxy Z Fold, with a notably upgraded ultrawide sensor, retained 200 MP main sensor and improved selfie processing. The ultrawide moves from 12 MP at f/2.2 on earlier models to a 50 MP sensor at f/1.9, while the Fold8 Ultra keeps the 200 MP main camera introduced on the Fold7. Telephoto and cover cameras remain 10 MP, and both selfie cameras are 10 MP with new AI image signal processing.

What’s new in the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra camera

The most significant hardware change is the ultrawide camera: a 50 MP sensor with an f/1.9 aperture and a wider field of view compared with the 12 MP, f/2.2 ultrawide used through the Fold7. That wider aperture increases light gathering and the Fold8 Ultra’s ultrawide offers higher-resolution macro photos (up to 50 MP). The phone also brings expanded video options for creators, including 8K recording from the ultrawide as well as the main camera, and APV (Advanced Professional Video) to preserve image quality through editing.

Hardware changes and camera specifications

Across recent generations, the Fold line’s main camera moved from 50 MP on the Fold5 and Fold6 to 200 MP on the Fold7 and Fold8 Ultra; the main aperture widened from f/1.8 to f/1.7. The ultrawide is now 50 MP, f/1.9, 120°, up from 12 MP at f/2.2. The telephoto remains 10 MP with 3x optical zoom and OIS. The cover camera is 10 MP, f/2.2, 85° across models, and the inner camera is 10 MP, f/2.2, 100° on the Fold7 and Fold8 Ultra (it was a 4 MP under-display camera on the Fold5 and Fold6). The Fold8 Ultra also supports HDR in 200 MP mode and offers multiple main-camera capture sizes, including 12 MP, 50 MP and 200 MP, with a 24 MP option available via Samsung’s Camera Assistant app.

Zoom, selfies and low-light performance

All recent Galaxy Z Fold models discussed use a 10 MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom; maximum zoom reaches 30x with digital assistance. The Fold8 Ultra’s zoom shortcuts are .6x (ultrawide), 1x, 2x (optical-quality crop from the main sensor), 3x (telephoto), 10x, 20x and 30x. Selfie capabilities improved when moving away from the 4 MP under-display camera: both inner and cover selfie cameras are 10 MP on the Fold8 Ultra, and an AI image signal processor refines skin tones and hair texture. For low light, the Fold8 Ultra’s ultrawide is 34% brighter versus the Fold7’s ultrawide due to the wider aperture, while Nightography processing and the ProVisual Engine reduce noise depending on sensor and conditions.

Video and creator-focused features

The Fold8 Ultra adds creator tools such as APV and Pro video mode, which work across main, ultrawide, telephoto and selfie cameras. It supports 8K recording on both main and ultrawide cameras, and 4K at 60 fps on rear and both selfie cameras. In 4K30 or 4K60 video modes, you can switch between ultrawide, main and telephoto, or between rear and selfie cameras without stopping recording. Stabilization features include Super Steady and Super Steady with Horizontal Lock. My FanCam in Gallery can follow a selected person in a recorded video to create a new clip that tracks that subject. The phone offers Pro mode controls for all cameras and RAW capture via Pro mode or Expert RAW.

Practical benefits for travel and everyday use

The combination of a 200 MP main sensor, a higher-resolution f/1.9 ultrawide and a 3x optical telephoto gives photographers flexible framing options: ultrawide for tight spaces and architecture, 3x optical for closer portraits, and high-resolution main shots for detailed crops. Cover screen preview and the large inner display facilitate rear-camera selfies, hands-free recording with a partially folded device, and easier framing and editing on the go.

The Fold8 Ultra therefore represents a clear camera upgrade over the Fold7 and earlier models through its upgraded ultrawide sensor, improved selfie processing and expanded video capabilities, while retaining the 200 MP main camera and 3x telephoto optics introduced on previous generations.
