Hone raises $60M seed at $285M valuation to build autonomous AI

Hone, a San Francisco start-up building autonomous AI systems for businesses, has raised a $60 million seed round led by Benchmark and co-led by Index Ventures that values the company at $285 million.

Elad Gil, Hanabi, Definition and Diffusion also participated in the round, according to FinSMEs.

The company is about five months old and was founded by former staff of OpenAI and Cognition AI, according to Dealroom. Co-founders Moritz Stephan, Oliver Brady and Carlo Kobe are developing what Hone calls Engines: autonomous systems designed to take ongoing responsibility for business outcomes rather than completing single tasks.

Hone’s autonomous Engines and market pitch

Hone says its Engines learn an organization’s processes and work continuously across people, systems and data to run multi-step workflows in areas such as revenue growth, conversion optimization, cost reduction and operational risk. The company said it will use the capital to expand its platform and scale development of these autonomous systems.

The company positions its offering as a step beyond the copilots and task-level automation that dominated the first wave of enterprise AI products: its agents aim to own a measurable result over weeks or months, not just assist on individual tasks.

The size and valuation of the round are notable for venture investors. A $60 million first institutional round at a $285 million valuation for a company less than half a year old reflects the aggressive competition among top-tier firms for AI teams with pedigrees from leading labs. Benchmark, known for concentrated bets and small partnerships, leading the round alongside Index Ventures underscores that competition.

For allocators with venture exposure, outsized seed rounds such as Hone’s indicate early-stage pricing in AI moving closer to what used to be Series A or B territory. That dynamic can compress future returns if companies take longer to reach revenue, but it also reflects the view that the agent market may be won by teams that build quickly and accumulate enterprise workflow data before rivals.
