Apple plans to unveil 14‑inch and 16‑inch MacBook Pro models with touch‑enabled OLED displays on Wednesday, October 28, Mark Gurman reported, with an event in Los Angeles scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific Time where attendees invited to the “Pro and tell” experience are likely to get hands‑on time after a press release announcement.
These new MacBook Pro models are expected to resemble the current lineup but weigh less and replace the notch with a Dynamic Island at the top of the screen. They will be powered by Apple’s existing M5 Pro and M5 Max chips released in March, Gurman said.
MacBook Pro hardware and pricing
Because of the costlier OLED panels, the new MacBook Pro models are expected to carry higher prices. In the U.S., the current 14‑inch and 16‑inch models with mini‑LED displays and M5 Pro/M5 Max chips start at $2,499 and $2,999 respectively; starting prices for the OLED models could be up to $500 higher. The existing mini‑LED MacBook Pro models will remain in Apple’s lineup for now but are expected to be discontinued eventually.
Touch experience and macOS Golden Gate
macOS Golden Gate is said to include a “dynamic interface” designed for touch input. “The system will take previous interactions into account, presenting controls based on whether someone has been touching the display or using the trackpad,” Gurman wrote. “Touching a button can also bring up a menu around the user’s finger, while the Dock and Menu Bar have been optimized for touch.” He added that Apple will position touch as an additional input method to be used alongside the keyboard and trackpad.
