Apple announced an all‑new iPad mini that adds an AMOLED display and, for the first time on any iPad, an IP rating: IP67 for dust and water resistance.
The company says the iPad mini was tested under IEC standard 60529 for maximum depths of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. This makes the new iPad mini the first iPad to directly compete with Samsung’s premium Galaxy Tabs on dust and water protection, though it still falls slightly short of Samsung’s higher IP68 claim.
iPad mini IP67: testing and limits
The iPad mini carries an IP67 rating, meaning Apple validated resistance to dust and immersion at the IEC 60529 limits cited by the company: up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes. Apple did not specify whether other iPad models will receive IP ratings.
How it compares to Samsung Galaxy Tabs
Samsung has offered dust and water resistance on its flagship Galaxy tablets since 2023, beginning with the Galaxy Tab S9, and claims an IP68 rating for its premium models. Apple’s move places the iPad mini closer to that level but, by the rating alone, still a step below Samsung’s claimed protection.
The IP67 rating complements the iPad mini’s positioning as a small, portable tablet suitable for a wide range of environments and users. Apple noted practical benefits such as reduced concern over spills or unexpected rain for iPad mini owners, while Samsung has been offering similar protection on its flagship tablets since 2023.
