Apple has acknowledged a hardware issue affecting a small number of iPhone Duo units after multiple pre-order customers reported identical screen damage caused by what appears to be a component from the hinge puncturing the foldable panel.
Reporter Mark Gurman, who previously described Apple’s messy iPhone Duo launch as “a major mistake,” confirmed that Apple is aware of the problem after several people sent images and accounts of broken iPhone Duos. Apple responded with the following statement: “We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”
iPhone Duo display failures
Affected units show the same failure pattern: something—seemingly a hinge component—pokes the foldable screen from the inside, breaking a few horizontal and vertical rows of pixels and rendering the display unusable. According to reporting, the problem is not widespread; most iPhone Duos are not susceptible, but units that are affected can develop the issue quickly with relatively little use.
Possible cause and ongoing investigation
The foldable panel was manufactured by Samsung Display while final assembly was handled by Foxconn. A report from China (via @_FORAB) cites anonymous Foxconn employees who say Apple lowered quality inspection standards to speed supply, increasing the chance that defective units passed quality checks and reached customers. Apple is investigating the issue but has not shared detailed information about its cause.
The report notes it is unclear whether any reduction in inspection standards was a cost-cutting measure or related to Apple’s attempt to ship the iPhone Duo to more countries than initially planned. Either way, the situation has harmed Apple’s rollout while Samsung — whose Galaxy Z Fold 8 reportedly does not show the same problem — may be an indirect beneficiary.
