Galaxy Z Fold 8 camera features the iPhone Duo lacks

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 offers several advanced camera capabilities that the iPhone Duo does not, despite the two devices competing in the new foldable phone space. Apple’s iPhone Duo is the company’s first foldable and is noted for a fresh approach to software design, a less visible crease and an IP68 rating, but it omits a number of camera features available on Samsung’s eighth-generation foldable.

The two phones also differ slightly on camera hardware. The iPhone Duo has dual 48MP rear cameras, a 12MP front-facing cover camera and a 4MP under-display inner camera. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 uses a 50MP + 50MP rear camera setup and two 10MP selfie cameras, with the inner selfie camera offering a wider field of view than the outer one.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 camera advantages

While basic specs are comparable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 provides several functional camera features that the iPhone Duo lacks, affecting video workflows, manual controls and file handling.

Video codecs and Log recording

The Fold 8 supports the APV codec, which enables higher-quality video recording and more flexible post-production workflows. The iPhone Duo does not include Apple’s ProRes video codec (ProRes is available on the cheaper iPhone 18 Pro series but is missing from the iPhone Duo). The iPhone Duo also lacks Apple Log support, so it cannot record videos with a flat color profile for later color correction. By contrast, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 can record in Log format, offers onboard LUTs for faster color correction, and records Log at all video resolutions (including 8K); Log recording on the Fold 8 also works with the APV codec.

Pro controls, RAW capture and 8K recording

Although Apple added pro-grade manual controls to the stock Camera app on its new iPhones, the iPhone Duo does not support those manual controls for either photos or videos. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 provides granular manual controls in its stock Camera app via a Pro mode for both photos and videos, letting users adjust settings such as ISO and shutter speed. The Fold 8 also supports capturing RAW files on the device, a capability the iPhone Duo does not offer on Apple’s foldable. In addition, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 can record 8K 30fps video using its primary and ultrawide cameras; the iPhone Duo, like every iPhone released to date, lacks 8K recording.

Direct recording to external storage

The iPhone Duo cannot record videos directly to external storage using the stock Camera app. Apple allows direct recording to external storage only on its Pro iPhones and only when recording in the Apple ProRes format. Samsung imposes no equivalent restriction: on the Galaxy Z Fold 8, even standard videos can be saved directly to external storage.
