Galaxy S27 Ultra adopts iPhone-like camera design — is it the right move?

Leaked images of the Galaxy S27 Ultra show Samsung abandoning its signature split camera layout in favour of a single, protruding camera module reminiscent of the iPhone Pro, a change that has drawn negative reactions from parts of the Android tech community. Samsung says the Ultra line needs a visual overhaul after several generations that have retained the same overall design language.

The reported redesign includes a move away from sharp, angular corners and a curved screen toward a flat frame and rounded corners. Apart from some adjustments, the Galaxy S Ultra series has remained fairly consistent since the Galaxy S22 Ultra. When manufacturers refresh a product, they can either pursue an entirely novel design or adopt ideas that competitors have already proven effective; Samsung appears to be choosing the latter, and the company’s decision has prompted debate rather than universal criticism.

Observers note that groundbreaking innovation has not been Samsung’s hallmark in recent years. The company once produced consistently pioneering hardware features, but the source argues that era appears to be over; consumers may need to temper expectations of revolutionary design changes each generation.

Galaxy S27 Ultra and MagSafe-style magnets

One practical reason for consolidating all rear cameras onto a single platform could be to free internal space for a magnetic system. If true, the Galaxy S27 Ultra might support magnetic accessories similar to Apple’s MagSafe, enabling easier use of magnetic wireless chargers, wallet attachments, car mounts and stands. Historically, Galaxy users who wanted magnetic accessories often relied on third-party cases with built-in magnetic rings, products whose quality has varied. The source highlights that nothing beats the convenience of using a phone without a case while still attaching MagSafe-style accessories, and says that bringing such native magnetic support would be a meaningful everyday upgrade.

Camera redesign and photography ambitions

The redesign could also be an opportunity to restructure the entire camera system. The source argues that Galaxy cameras have not consistently led the market in all scenarios, particularly in low-light conditions and when photographing moving subjects. One cited reason is Samsung’s tendency to favor low ISO and slower shutter speeds, an approach suited to stationary scenes like landscapes but limiting for action or moving children and pets. Reports suggest Samsung may remove the older 3x telephoto camera in favour of a high-resolution, shorter-focal-length periscope module that enables zoom with virtually no loss of image quality. That is the direction many high-end manufacturers are taking, including Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Huawei/Honor. If Samsung adopts a similar approach, the Galaxy S27 Ultra could materially improve its photography capabilities and narrow the gap with its Chinese competitors.
