Can used cooking oil power heavy vehicles at Changi Airport?

Used cooking oil is now fueling heavy vehicles and specialized equipment at Changi Airport as part of a renewable diesel trial. The trial, which began in May, involves seven vehicles and aims to explore cleaner alternatives for the airport’s airside fleet. While electric options are available for lighter vehicles, most heavy vehicles in aviation, such as runway sweepers, still rely on diesel. The trial uses used cooking oil from airport eateries to produce renewable diesel at a Tuas refinery. This fuel can replace fossil diesel without engine modifications and uses existing infrastructure. Since August, the trial has operated on 100% renewable diesel, potentially reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to fossil diesel. The initiative is part of a broader effort to cut aviation emissions by 20% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Additional measures include a passenger levy for sustainable fuel and increased solar panel deployment.
