The Connecticut Department of Transportation is nearing a decision on long-term improvements for the “Mixmaster” interchange in Waterbury, where Interstate 84 and Route 8 intersect. Two alternatives, the “Modern Crossover Interchange” and the “Naugatuck River Shift,” are being considered. Both proposals involve unstacking and reconstructing the I-84 and Route 8 structures, aiming for a lifespan exceeding 75 years. While the project is expected to take decades, certain elements will be completed within five years, according to CTDOT commissioner Garrett Eucalitto. These options emerged from the New Mix Planning and Environmental Linkages Study, which incorporated feedback from local officials and the public. Additional projects related to the study are in various stages of development.
