Has Blue Water Autonomy secured $50 million to build autonomous naval ships?

Blue Water Autonomy, a Boston-based technology company, has announced a successful Series A funding round, raising $50 million to advance its efforts in developing uncrewed naval vessels for the U.S. Navy. The funding was led by GV from Mountainview, California, with contributions from existing investors such as Eclipse, Riot, and Impatient Ventures. This latest round brings the company’s total funding to $64 million, following a $14 million seed round in April 2025. As part of the deal, GV’s managing partner, Dave Munichiello, will join the company’s board of directors.

The company plans to utilize the funds to construct and deploy its first full-scale, long-range autonomous ship by 2026. The vessel is expected to measure between 100 and 150 feet and be capable of traveling thousands of miles autonomously. While specific details about the ship remain undisclosed, the company has made significant progress since its seed round, expanding its team fourfold, successfully conducting engineering tests, and sourcing materials from over 50 suppliers.

CEO Rylan Hamilton emphasized the urgent need for autonomous ships tailored for maritime security and logistics, highlighting the strategic focus on perfecting a single platform class to ensure quality and reliability. This development aligns with the U.S. Navy’s efforts to expand its fleet of autonomous surface vessels amidst concerns over a shipbuilding capacity gap with China. The Pentagon has recently accelerated its push for unmanned vessels, supported by $2.1 billion in Congressional funding.

While Blue Water Autonomy’s initial focus is on defense, the company envisions future applications in commercial maritime sectors. Its team includes Navy veterans and experienced shipbuilders, some of whom have contributed to the development of DARPA’s No Manning Required Ship (NOMARS). Munichiello praised Hamilton’s leadership, citing their long-standing professional relationship and the world-class team assembled to revolutionize maritime defense.
