Discussions continue in Hingham regarding the best approach to improve safety at the hazardous Main/Middle/Short Street intersection. A roundabout remains the leading proposal, aiming to reduce traffic speed and conflict points. Over the past five years, 19 accidents, including a fatal motorcycle crash in 2021, have prompted a safety audit by Vanasse & Associates, suggesting various improvements. While some residents advocate for alternatives like long, narrow islands or restricting certain turns, the roundabout remains a primary focus, with considerations for fire truck access and pedestrian safety.
A Complete Streets state grant could fund much of the roundabout project, but alternatives are being explored to accommodate all vehicle types. Concurrently, the Select Board is considering a townwide 25 mph speed limit, sparking debate about its effectiveness. While some officials support the measure to reduce accidents, others argue that blanket speed limits may not respect road characteristics and could lead to non-compliance. Further discussions are anticipated to address these critical safety concerns.
