Gartner has published its list of top strategic technology trends organisations should explore in 2027, highlighting AI governance, digital sovereignty and several AI-driven technologies such as large quantitative models, speech reasoning models, AI agent identity and sovereign tech.
“The critical friction today is that AI systems operate in an architectural vacuum, generating software faster than humans can review it, creating unmanaged credential paths and binding processes to single-source vendor monopolies,” said Gene Alvarez, Distinguished Vice-President Analyst at Gartner. “To prevent this systemic exposure, organisations must move from a passive observer of model capabilities to an active architect of organisation, human and machine boundaries.”
New model types and AI platforms
Gartner says deploying general-purpose language models for numerical tasks creates severe accuracy and compliance risks because of probabilistic guessing. The firm recommends a shift to large quantitative models — modular, hybrid neural network architectures built to process and analyse quantitative data — to move decision-making from reactive troubleshooting to proactive simulation.
The firm also highlights speech reasoning models, defined as voice AI systems that reason directly on audio, tracking context and intent across a conversation to determine what to do next. “Voice remains the enterprise’s highest-volume interaction channel, but even a decade of customer support automation has failed to deliver the accuracy, speed and resolution rates enterprise deployment demands,” Alvarez said. “Speech reasoning models close that gap at scale, making complex, judgment-intensive conversations viable to automate.”
Gartner describes world models as enabling a physics-first paradigm in which machines comprehend space, time and causality, allowing autonomous agents to simulate potential future states, predict outcomes and understand consequences before execution. The company links this development to rising investments in robotics, autonomous vehicles and spatial computing.
The firm also points to AI context platforms that provide agents with the contextual knowledge needed to interpret inputs, make decisions and act in line with business objectives. Gartner predicts that by 2027, organisations that prioritise semantics in AI-ready data will increase agentic AI accuracy by up to 80 per cent and reduce costs by up to 60 per cent.
AI governance and agent identity risks
Gartner warns that AI agent identity is a major governance challenge because AI agents execute tasks independently and act on behalf of multiple humans, exposing vulnerabilities in legacy systems that cannot deliver just-in-time access. The firm predicts that by 2028, 25 per cent of enterprise security breaches will trace back to AI agent abuse due to unmanaged machine privileges and legacy credential practices.
To manage autonomous developer behaviour across the software lifecycle, Gartner describes an AI coding agent harness as a closed-loop control system. Without such a harness, developers must spend time manually verifying machine output, triggering a costly governance inversion that erases productivity gains.
Gartner also outlines autonomous exposure remediation (AER) as an integrated set of capabilities combining AI techniques and automation to find, prioritise and fix security vulnerabilities across the enterprise digital estate, automatically testing and deploying patches or virtual patches into production environments.
Sovereign tech, disposable apps and emerging compute
Sovereign tech (SovTech) covers hardware, software, databases and AI models architected technically and legally to offer realistic exit strategies from critical providers, ensuring perpetual availability to prevent lock-in and secure operational continuity. Gartner predicts that by 2030, over 75 per cent of non-US based organisations will adopt digital sovereignty strategies, shifting critical workloads to reduce geopolitical and vendor lock-in risks.
Gartner also defines disposable applications as purpose-built software designed to be intentionally retired once their specific business purpose has been fulfilled or is no longer relevant.
On compute, Gartner notes that traditional silicon hardware cannot scale enterprise AI indefinitely due to environmental and energy limits. The firm describes “Wetware as a Service” as an emerging model providing remote cloud-based access to living or synthetic biological systems for computation; these hosted organic processors use the natural plasticity of biochemical networks to run complex algorithms with extreme energy efficiency.
