AirPods 5: USB‑C Case vs Wireless Charging Case — Buyer’s Guide

Apple sells two versions of the AirPods 5: a $129 model that ships with a USB‑C Charging Case and a $149 model that comes with a Wireless Charging Case. The $20 premium also buys longer battery life, swipe volume controls and expanded Find My features, so the differences affect both the earbuds and their cases.

Shared features

Both models include Active Noise Cancellation, the H2 chip, the same open‑ear design and a redesigned acoustic architecture with updated Adaptive EQ. They share Transparency mode, Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Spatial Audio, Voice Isolation, studio‑quality audio recording and IP57 dust, sweat and water resistance. Both support Live Translation when paired with a compatible iPhone with Apple Intelligence enabled, in supported languages and regions. The earbuds themselves have identical dimensions and weight.

Key differences

Controls: the standard AirPods 5 use a force sensor; the Wireless Charging Case model adds a force sensor with swipe volume controls.

Battery (single charge, listening time): the AirPods 5 offer up to four hours with Active Noise Cancellation enabled (up to six hours with noise control off). The AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case offer up to five hours with Active Noise Cancellation enabled (up to seven hours with noise control off).

Battery (with charging case): the standard model provides up to 20 hours of listening time with its charging case; the wireless‑case model provides up to 22 hours.

Charging case and charging options: the $129 model ships with a USB‑C Charging Case. The $149 model ships with a Wireless Charging Case (USB‑C) that supports the Apple Watch charger and Qi‑certified chargers.

Find My and locating features: the standard AirPods 5 report last‑connected location and support sound playback on the earbuds. The Wireless Charging Case model adds Find My network tracking, sound playback on the earbuds, separate locations for each earbud and the case, and individual Lost Mode support. The Wireless Charging Case also includes a case speaker for Find My and for charging and battery status sounds.

Weight: the charging cases are the same size, with the standard charging case weighing 32.3 grams (1.14 ounces) and the Wireless Charging Case weighing 34.7 grams (1.22 ounces).

Price: $129 for the AirPods 5 with USB‑C Charging Case; $149 for the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case.

Which AirPods 5 should you buy?

For most people, the AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are the better buy. The additional $20 is a modest premium for longer listening time, swipe volume controls and more robust Find My capabilities. Longer battery life helps for travel and extended listening sessions, swipe volume controls eliminate the need to reach for an iPhone or rely on Siri, and the wireless case’s Find My features and case speaker make it easier to locate mislaid earbuds or a buried case. Wireless charging is particularly useful if you already own a Qi charger or an Apple Watch charger.

The standard AirPods 5 make sense if you are on a strict budget, want a secondary pair, or mostly listen in short sessions. You retain the same core audio technology and Active Noise Cancellation, but you accept USB‑C‑only charging, shorter battery life, fewer onboard controls and more limited Find My functionality.

Note that the charging cases are not interchangeable: buying the standard AirPods 5 does not let you later add wireless charging by purchasing the other model’s case.
