Windows 11 users find themselves envious of macOS’s approach to widgets, with Apple’s recent introduction of a sports widget that enhances the iOS and iPadOS experience on desktops. Although Windows 11 has had a sports widget for some time, the frustration stems from Microsoft’s lack of promotion and development of widgets, contrasting sharply with Apple’s strategy.
Microsoft introduced the widgets board on Windows 11 in 2022, but it wasn’t until late 2023 that they began testing an option to disable the news feed within it. Currently, the board feels more like a platform for MSN news rather than a dedicated space for widgets. The latest update, which includes an AI-curated news feed, requires additional steps to access widgets, further diminishing their prominence.
With only 50 widgets available in the Microsoft Store, many of which are niche or repetitive, the selection is seen as lacking. Even well-known companies offer limited functionality, such as the Spotify widget, which only shows trending playlists without allowing control over the app. While some useful widgets exist, the overall offering is considered inadequate, especially when compared to macOS, which boasts a more extensive and varied selection.
