Email users are being warned about a new phishing scam involving fake ‘Urgent Security’ alerts. Cybercriminals are increasingly using sophisticated tactics to deceive users, and a recent scam involves emails that appear to be from Google. These emails claim there has been suspicious activity on your account and include a button labeled “Check Activity” or “Review Activity.” Clicking on this button directs users to a counterfeit Google sign-in page that looks authentic, leading them to unwittingly provide their login details to hackers.
Once hackers obtain your email and password, they can gain full access to your account, allowing them to read emails, send spam, and potentially access sensitive financial information. This can result in significant financial and personal data loss.
To protect yourself, do not panic when receiving such emails. Verify the sender’s address to ensure it is genuinely from Google. If in doubt about your account’s security, manually type gmail.com into your browser to log in independently. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for added security, ensuring that even if your password is compromised, unauthorized access is prevented. Avoid clicking on unknown links, especially those marked as “urgent” or “immediate,” as these are often tactics used by hackers to prompt hasty actions.
