Did Apple Lead the Global Smartphone Market in Q1 for the First Time?

In the first quarter of 2026, Apple emerged as the top global smartphone brand by shipments, marking the first time it has led the market in a Q1. The company secured 21 percent of global shipments, achieving a 9 percent year-over-year growth, despite an overall market decline of 3 percent. Samsung followed closely with a similar market share, while Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo trailed behind. Xiaomi experienced a significant 19 percent drop in shipments, with OPPO and vivo also seeing declines. Apple’s success is attributed to strong demand for the iPhone 17 series, which dominated sales charts, and effective supply chain management. The company also benefited from improved sales in China and its ability to maintain premium pricing amid a memory chip shortage. While memory shortages continue to challenge the industry, Apple anticipates greater impacts later in the year, with potential market-wide effects extending into late 2027.
