Emulate is in talks to raise a $700 million seed round and is aiming for a $3 billion valuation before new money, people with knowledge of the discussions said. The sources, who requested anonymity because the details are not public, said Index Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners are expected to anchor the round, with Creandum participating. The negotiations were first flagged publicly. Representatives for Emulate, Lightspeed and Index did not immediately respond to inquiries, and Creandum declined to comment.
Emulate’s fundraising and backers
According to people familiar with the talks, the startup is discussing the $700 million seed raise while targeting a roughly $3 billion pre-money valuation. Index Ventures and Lightspeed Venture Partners are expected to anchor the financing, with Creandum taking part, one person said. The reporting noted the discussions were flagged earlier; Emulate and the named firms did not immediately respond to requests for comment and Creandum declined to comment.
World-model focus and founders
Founded by Jack Parker-Holder, Matthew McGill and Philip Ball, all alumni of DeepMind’s world-model team, Emulate focuses on building systems that model physical processes and predict their behavior. World models are described as an emerging frontier in AI, viewed as less crowded than the large language model space that underpins tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude.
Investor interest is flowing to startups founded by veteran researchers. Another DeepMind alumnus, David Silver, raised about $1 billion in April for Ineffable Intelligence at a $5 billion valuation, and AMI Labs, co-founded by former Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun, secured a little more than $1 billion in March. The coverage notes that if more capital shifts toward world models over classic chatbots, competition could broaden and valuations could continue to stretch, particularly for teams with top-tier research pedigrees.
