Galaxy S27 may adopt horizontal camera bar, WIPO drawings suggest

Design drawings filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) suggest Samsung may redesign the rear cameras on the Galaxy S27, showing three lenses arranged side by side in an elongated horizontal module rather than the vertical stack used on recent Galaxy S models.

Galaxy S27 camera redesign shown in WIPO drawings

The drawings, reported by a Samsung-focused website after their appearance in the WIPO database, depict a smartphone with three cameras aligned horizontally in a single bar. That layout would mark a departure from the vertically stacked camera modules that characterize the current Galaxy S series. The published illustrations also show the camera module only slightly protruding from the back, which could make the device appear slimmer than the Galaxy S26.

A comparable horizontal camera solution is already used by other manufacturers: Google’s Pixel models employ a horizontal camera bar, and the iPhone Air also features a horizontal camera plateau. Adopting a similar layout would therefore represent a significant change in Samsung’s appearance but not a wholly new approach to smartphone camera design.

The reported design change may have functional reasons as well as aesthetic ones. Current Galaxy S models typically require a special case with a magnetic ring for Qi2 accessories, and in some implementations that ring sits very close to the telephoto camera. Strong magnetic fields can affect autofocus and image stabilization; a horizontal camera bar would increase the distance between the magnetic ring and camera components and could reduce related issues, according to the same report.

Whether Samsung will actually launch the Galaxy S27 with this redesigned camera layout remains unclear. The new generation is expected to be unveiled in early 2027, but the company has not announced an official date; the final design choices will become clear only at reveal.
