Counterpoint Research says sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 series in the first two weeks after launch were 8% higher than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 during its own first two weeks, marking an early sales lead for the new models. A few days earlier, Samsung had said combined sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra were 30% higher than those of the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Why the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is driving demand
Counterpoint’s analysis attributes much of the Z8 series’ early strength to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 itself, which accounted for roughly 57% of total Z8 series sales in the first two weeks. Buyers appear to favour the Fold 8 for its more compact footprint and the inner display’s 4:3 aspect ratio, with some users describing the device as “cute.”
Counterpoint Research Associate Director Sujeong Lim said, “We estimate that the Z Fold 8 accounted for roughly 57% of Z8 series sales during the first two weeks after launch, thanks to a clear and compelling value proposition.” She added, “For consumers considering a foldable phone, this product offers additional specification options by providing an attractive aspect ratio that transforms it into a tablet when unfolded, along with a versatile multitasking experience.”
Sales hold up despite rising component costs
The 8% advantage is notable given that smartphone prices were increasing at the time, driven in part by rising memory chip costs. Counterpoint noted that the sales rise occurred even as overall device pricing pressure was growing.
Supply and competitive outlook
Lim also cautioned that initial supply issues — including stockouts at some retailers — constrained availability and that sales are expected to stabilise as supply normalises. “Considering that initial supply was not smooth due to stockouts at some retailers, sales of the Z8 are expected to remain relatively stable as supply normalizes. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s successful launch could face its biggest test in the coming weeks.”
Counterpoint Research Associate Director Sujeong Liz Lee pointed to another potential test on the horizon: “Apple is expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone next month. Based on current information, it appears to adopt a similar display size and aspect ratio to the Z Fold 8, targeting the high-value premium smartphone market that Samsung has painstakingly built over six generations.”
