Google has opened preorders for its first Googlebooks, a new category of laptops built on Android with desktop features drawn from ChromeOS. The initial models come from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Samsung is not among the launch partners, but Google says you won’t need a Samsung laptop to use these features with a Galaxy phone.
How Googlebooks work with your Galaxy phone
Google says Googlebooks are designed to work with Android phones from the very first boot. During setup a Googlebook can bring over information from your phone, including saved passwords, Wi‑Fi networks, messages and some settings.
After setup, several integration features let you continue using phone content and apps on the laptop. Continue On lets you start a task on a Galaxy phone and resume it from the Googlebook’s taskbar; Google gives the example of beginning a project in BandLab on your phone and continuing it on the laptop. This capability depends on app support: developers can configure Continue On to open the corresponding Android app on the Googlebook or a web version of the activity.
Cast My Apps lets you open and control apps from your Galaxy phone in a window on the Googlebook. In that mode the app runs on the phone and streams to the laptop, so you do not need to install a copy on the Googlebook to complete a quick task. Googlebooks can also install Android apps directly from the Play Store; unlike Cast My Apps, those installs run the app on the laptop itself.
Quick Access lets you find and open photos, documents or screenshots stored on your phone through the Googlebook’s Files app without transferring them first. According to Google’s system services release notes, you can also view and manage phone notifications on a Googlebook.
Requirements and Samsung’s plans
All of these Googlebook features require a smartphone running Android 17 or newer — on Samsung devices that means One UI 9 or later. Separately, Samsung is developing Android‑based Galaxy Book laptops that will run One UI.
These integrations aim to bring phone content and apps into the laptop experience, but several features depend on app developers and on the phone meeting the Android 17 / One UI 9 requirement.
