Fonio.ai has successfully raised $17 million in a seed funding round, valuing the company at $140 million. The initiative aims to develop an AI-driven communication suite tailored for small and medium-sized enterprises worldwide. Founded by Matthias Gruber and Daniel Keinrath, fonio.ai has established itself as a leading AI phone agent platform in Europe, assisting businesses in managing inbound customer calls with AI agents capable of real-time responses and call routing. Expanding its offerings, the company is venturing into WhatsApp, with plans to integrate chatbots, email, and CRM functionalities, creating a comprehensive AI communication suite for SMBs. The company reports impressive growth metrics, including a $6 million annual recurring revenue (ARR) and a target of $30 million ARR by the end of the year, alongside handling over two million automated calls monthly and achieving more than 30% month-over-month growth. Its clientele includes notable names like Volkswagen, Brita, and Storebox. The company has expanded its workforce from 15 to 50 employees in just five months. The funding round was led by 20VC, Harry Stebbings’ renowned venture capital fund. Fonio.ai has developed a proprietary Orchestration Layer, a rare achievement globally, and was the first to address turn detection in AI phone calls, enhancing the natural flow of AI conversations. Compliance with GDPR and the EU AI Act underscores its commitment to integrating AI agents into real business infrastructure. This marks a significant milestone for a European AI company targeting a clear SMB use case.
