Professionals and entrepreneurs are being encouraged to enhance their negotiation skills to improve their economic and professional outcomes. Adedayo Oketola, President of the International Visitor Leadership Program Alumni Association of Nigeria, emphasized this during a recent masterclass in Lagos. The event, part of the Empower-to-Prosper Series, focused on empowering participants to negotiate effectively and charge appropriately for their value.
Oketola highlighted that many Nigerians are underpaid not due to lack of talent but due to poor negotiation habits and self-doubt. He stressed the importance of shifting from hesitation to confidence and from guessing one’s worth to knowing it.
The masterclass provided practical tools for pricing, deal structuring, and high-value engagements. Odunola Onadipe, COO at Detail Commercial Solicitors, led the first session on understanding market value and effective value propositions. She introduced the BATNA model as a key negotiation tool and emphasized understanding others’ motives and communication styles.
Dr. Peter Ogudoro, Founder of the Nigerian Teachers Community, facilitated the second session on client engagement and pricing psychology. He advised using humility and tact in complex deals and the importance of asking clarifying questions to maintain dialogue.
The event attracted professionals from various sectors, including law, education, and media, and concluded with a certificate ceremony. Participants praised the event’s organization and the depth of insights shared. Dr. Maymunah Kadiri described the sessions as a combination of strategy and personal growth.
