An increasing number of lawyers are leaving traditional firms to establish their own practices, often leveraging artificial intelligence to reduce operational costs. Pamir Ehsas is among these innovators. Formerly a junior lawyer at a major Norwegian firm, Ehsas worked with clients like OpenAI on various legal issues. He left to create Moritz, a law firm and software startup that develops tools for its own legal team. Initially aiming to secure a $3 million seed round, Moritz successfully raised $9 million just before completing Y Combinator’s program. This funding round included contributions from Y Combinator, Urban Innovation Fund, 20VC, and Inception Fund, alongside notable angel investors from companies like Reddit, Instacart, and Dropbox.
Moritz, originally named Arcline, positions itself as a modern alternative to traditional law firms, providing faster and more cost-effective legal services for startups and corporate clients. Its software aids in drafting and reviewing documents such as offer letters and contracts. As part of a new wave of startups redefining legal services, Moritz is among those supported by Y Combinator and other accelerators focused on LegalTech. Despite its promising approach, Moritz must demonstrate that its technology can enhance legal efficiency without compromising the quality expected by clients. Ehsas emphasizes the firm’s rigorous hiring process, noting that only about 1% of lawyer applicants are accepted.
