How Did Pakistan Issue Over 5.5 Million Passports in 2025?

In 2025, Pakistan witnessed a significant surge in passport issuance, reaching 5.5 million passports delivered to citizens. This increase was accompanied by a series of service enhancements that transformed access to travel documents. The year saw the distribution of 3.2 million normal passports, 1.8 million urgent ones, and 276,000 through a fast-track service. A notable trend was the rising preference for electronic passports over traditional ones.

The advancements were largely attributed to reforms initiated by the Director-General of Passports, following directives from the Prime Minister and the Interior Minister. Key improvements included the installation of modern printing machines that eliminated longstanding application backlogs.

For the first time, a 24/7 passport processing and delivery service was introduced, allowing citizens to apply and receive passports at any time. Renovations at the passport headquarters and regional offices enhanced public-facing facilities.

Overseas Pakistanis also saw improvements with the introduction of a one-window service at embassies, simplifying passport-related procedures. Additionally, a new passport book with enhanced security features was developed, and the network of passport offices and counters was expanded nationwide.
