Two Southern Oregon University students, Chandler Campbell and Jacob Nowack, recently showcased their AI research at a national conference in Philadelphia. Campbell, a computer science graduate, presented his work on preserving tacit knowledge within research teams, which often gets lost when projects end. Nowack, a current student, discussed a tool that aids UCLA astronomers in surveying distant galaxies. Their projects are supervised by Bernadette Boscoe, an assistant professor at SOU, who focuses on developing AI tools for domain scientists. Nowack’s project uses machine learning to estimate galaxy distances much faster than traditional methods, facilitating large-scale cosmic surveys. Meanwhile, Campbell’s project, AquiLLM, aims to create an AI-enabled repository to retain informal communication within research groups. Both students received valuable feedback and insights during the conference, which included participants from leading research institutions.
