Artificial intelligence is poised to transform global weather prediction and the response to environmental challenges. A groundbreaking conference, organized by the World Meteorological Organization and the UAE’s National Center of Meteorology, brought together over 50 experts from national meteorological and hydrological services, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, academia, and industry leaders such as Google, IBM, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Tomorrow.io, Brightband, and HMEI. The conference emphasized the importance of shared and open data, coordinated benchmarks, and human-centered service design to ensure AI systems are trusted, transparent, and interoperable, while respecting the authoritative role of national meteorological services. Key priorities identified include capacity building, regional pilot projects, discussions on public and private datasets, and support for observational and physics-based systems. The conference statement will guide discussions at the WMO Extraordinary Congress from October 20-24.
