Apple will not ship a standard iPhone 18 this fall; only the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and a foldable iPhone Ultra are expected in the autumn, while the lower-cost iPhone 18 is delayed until spring 2027. That timing raise the central question for buyers of the iPhone 17: purchase now or wait for the next entry-level model.
iPhone 17 — price, timing and immediate savings
If prices rise this fall as rumored, buying an iPhone 17 now could save money, especially for customers paying the full price up front. The iPhone 17 starts at $799. Analysts expect the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max to be $100 to $300 more expensive, and the iPhone 18 itself could also cost more. TrendForce suggests Apple might increase prices on existing iPhone models, including the iPhone 17, when it introduces new iPhone 18 Pro models; if that happens there may be little monetary benefit to waiting. With a payment plan, buying now still saves money but the difference becomes a few dollars per month over 12 to 24 months.
Trade-ins are worth more now
If you plan to trade in an older iPhone, trade-in values are higher today than they will be after the iPhone 18 Pro launch. Trade-in prices for older iPhones typically drop with each new iPhone introduction.
Quality concerns in iPhone 18 rumors
Rumors indicate Apple may use some cost-cutting measures for the iPhone 18 that could reduce quality in certain areas: a cheaper, less bright screen and lower-quality A20 chips with fewer GPU cores have been reported, and the iPhone 18 may share components with a low-cost iPhone 18e, narrowing the gap with higher-end models. If those reports are accurate, the iPhone 18 might offer less value relative to the iPhone 17.
iOS 27 features and RAM limits
There are conflicting reports about iPhone 18 RAM. Two rumors say it could get 12GB, while analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts 9GB. With 9GB of RAM the iPhone 18 would not support iOS 27 features for Siri expressive voices and improved dictation, which reportedly require 12GB. The iPhone 17 has 8GB of RAM and will not get those iOS 27 features either, so there is no iOS 27 advantage to waiting unless Apple equips the iPhone 18 with 12GB.
What upgrades the iPhone 18 may bring
Reported iPhone 18 upgrades include an A20 chip built on a 2nm process, potentially faster CPU performance and efficiency; either 9GB or 12GB of RAM; a possible 24-megapixel front camera instead of an 18-megapixel unit; a smaller Dynamic Island similar to the change planned for iPhone 18 Pro models; and a likely C2 modem for faster, more reliable connectivity. The standard iPhone 18, however, will not arrive until spring 2027.
Why the iPhone 17 remains a strong choice
The iPhone 17 is recommended for most people in the 2026 iPhone Buyer’s Guide because it balances premium features, performance and price. It offers a 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, an Always-On display, the same Wide and Ultra Wide cameras and a display size comparable to the iPhone 17 Pro, with a chip that is not dramatically slower. The iPhone 17 lacks a Telephoto camera, has less RAM, a less durable chassis and a smaller battery than Pro models, but for users upgrading from an iPhone 13, 14 or 15 it represents a major step up.
Cost and timing are the main reasons to buy an iPhone 17 now rather than wait: trade-in values are higher today and you avoid the uncertainty of spring 2027 pricing and a roughly six-month delay before the standard iPhone 18 appears.
