Apple’s foldable iPhone brings camera features tied directly to its dual-display design. The iPhone Duo camera introduces unique software utilities and a two-camera “Dual Fusion” setup, while omitting several high-end Pro features found on Apple’s Pro models.
Unique camera features tied to the dual display
Smart Take uses AI to detect when everyone, including the iPhone owner, is ready for a group shot so you can prop the Duo half-folded and let it capture the image without a timer. Kid Cue displays small Peanuts animations to draw children’s attention to the camera. Duo Preview shows a live preview on both displays so the subject can adjust their pose. Duo FaceTime lets a nearby friend join a FaceTime call using the outer display while the owner uses the inner display; this is distinct from Dual Capture, which records with both front and rear cameras.
iPhone Duo camera hardware and zoom limits
The Duo uses a “Dual Fusion” two-camera arrangement with a 48MP Main camera—essentially the same main camera as the iPhone 17 (not the 17 Pro)—producing 26mm 24MP images by default and 12MP 2x “telephoto” images at 52mm. The phone supports sensor-shift optical image stabilization but not the second-generation version found in Pro models. It does not support spatial photos or the ProRAW format. The handset also includes a 48MP Ultra Wide camera at 13mm with macro capabilities. The device lacks a dedicated Telephoto lens and is therefore limited to 2x optical-quality zoom in, 2x optical zoom out, and digital zoom up to 10x for images.
Video, stabilization and special modes
Smart focus tracking, new to the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro, uses AI to keep a subject in focus and to resume tracking if the subject leaves and re-enters the frame. The Duo supports 4K Dolby Vision video recording at up to 120 fps and Cinematic mode for 4K Dolby Vision at up to 60 fps. For the first time, Cinematic effects can be added to a video after capture on the Duo and iPhone 18 Pro. Apple also reports improved low-light video when recording at 1080p on the Duo. Time-lapse video recording with stabilization up to 4K Dolby Vision is an added option on the Duo and iPhone 18 Pro, particularly useful because the folding mechanism lets the device stand without a tripod.
Front cameras and foldable form advantages
The Duo’s outer front-facing camera is 12MP (not 18MP, as on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro models) and otherwise shares the same features. The inner display houses a 1080p FaceTime camera under the display. The folding mechanism functions as a built-in tripod and stand, enabling hands-free FaceTime calls, stable video recording, long exposures and selfies using the higher-quality 48MP rear camera while the outer display acts as a viewfinder—capabilities not available on a traditional slab iPhone.
