Is AltStore Now Available in Japan Following Apple’s New Marketplace Rules?

Just a day after Apple introduced support for alternative app marketplaces for iOS users in Japan, AltStore PAL has launched in the country. Japanese iPhone users can now download this alternative marketplace from the AltStore website, allowing them to install apps without using Apple’s App Store. To use AltStore, users must be in Japan and have a Japanese App Store account, with devices running iOS 26.2 or later.

Developer Riley Testut noted that Apple did not inform them in advance about the recent changes to the App Store rules. However, AltStore was able to launch quickly in Japan due to its prior availability in the European Union. To mark the launch, users can enjoy a month of free Patreon access, which includes exclusive features. While AltStore is free, its Patreon offers access to beta updates for the Delta game emulator.

In addition to Delta, AltStore PAL features several apps from independent developers, some offering functionalities not permitted in the standard App Store. Apps on AltStore PAL can monetize through Patreon subscriptions. Apple’s move to allow alternative app marketplaces aligns with the Mobile Software Competition Act, effective since December 18, which requires a five percent commission to Apple.

These alternative marketplaces need Apple’s authorization to operate and can distribute apps that have been notarized by Apple. This notarization ensures basic functionality and the absence of malware, though content oversight by Apple is limited.
