Edinburgh’s tram network and Lothian bus services have introduced support for Apple Pay’s Express Mode, allowing passengers to pay for their journeys without unlocking their iPhone or Apple Watch. This feature, which launched recently, follows a similar implementation in Greater Manchester in August, marking the first time a UK public transport system outside London has adopted Express Mode. With this mode, users can bypass authentication steps like Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode by simply holding their device near a contactless payment reader. In the Apple Wallet app, users can designate a default payment card for transit under “Express Travel Settings,” enabling seamless payment. While the default card in Wallet is typically used, it can be changed in Settings. Express Mode is already available in major cities such as London, New York, Beijing, Tokyo, and Sydney.
